PHILIPPINE CULTURE

INTRODUCTION
From the very beginning of time, mankind have surfaced the real essence of propagating some important issues about anything. When we take a closer step to some point of achieving something, creating some solutions, and even building our own selves, we can easily notice that the motion would always start within ourselves. Everything that we did is a product of our own thoughts. We can create and at the same time, we can destroy.
Our culture has an important role in dealing with all the elements in a particular Society. Everything that takes place within an environment is based on a form of cultural influence. What would happen if there is an existence of a rapid demoralization? What if one day we turn to a point that even in ourselves, we cannot manage to stop this very huge damage in our culture? The saddest fraction is that the damage is already done and millions of Filipinos are not attentive of this powerful destruction that is captivating its place over our nation. In fact, we soak up those kinds of practices and take it as a part of our daily routines. The damage has done and the infectivity towards our culture is inexorable. Humans are the authors of their own culture and the society is the publishing area.  We are the creator but we cannot define what we have formed.
The modernization age is the turning point of some influential matters here in our country.  There are thousands of effects that can manipulate every Filipinos. These effects are examples of cultural transformation and there are many Filipinos who are having difficulties in rediscovering the symbols of values that has been lost long ago.  The rediscovering of those lost symbols is another way to progress the lives of every Filipinos. In order for us Filipinos to overcome this kind of obliteration, we need to know those things that are affecting our own culture.  Just like in a war, a soldier must know his enemy first before getting into the battle. In our case, we need to examine those issues that are affecting our moral values.
Most of the time, Filipinos are easily influenced by foreign factors. We are very dependent to some imported attitudes and we are easily disturbed by it. It affects everything inside our society. The examples are the uses of foreign languages. Our comparative linguistics is very important to us Filipinos. The invasion has occurred during the rise of these influences. There are millions of Filipinos who are using foreign languages which in fact they don’t understand what they are talking about.  Another observation is the rapid use of foreign products.

BODY

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PHILIPPINE CULTURE?
What’s really wrong with the Philippine culture? We are being discriminated by other countries not to mention we discriminate our own selves. We tend to be contented to what we have and not crave for more since we are afraid of the consequences. We Filipinos are afraid to be different that we forget without deviation there can be no progress. We can see our faults but still press even if it’s wrong. We are so reliant to our norms that we do not care about change but seek it through our countries leaders.
The Enculturation of the Philippine Culture
The Filipino Culture nowadays is very reliant to the technology around us. What we do not know is that everything we own and every action we make is somehow influenced by the invasion of culture by the foreign powers to us. For example, the social media, it has become a staple to every netizen in the world not to mention the enthusiastic Filipino teenager nowadays. Rather than just being a past time activity it has become a teenage social necessity. The users are always up for grabs for what’s new online, if something cool has pop up and was a hit, we Filipino’s would directly follow it, becoming a social trend.
We do not question our natural ethics anymore because we need to stay and stick to what the mainstream media offers us . We do not notice the slow and darkening crawls of enculturation to us because we are numb of this perspective. The perspective of a sociologist, to see things in all possible aspects there is.
Some Filipinos today do not foresee the dwindling ethics our forefathers have incorporated and taught us a long time ago. We are solely dependent to what the foreign powers offer us, to the point where we see them as a ray of hope, a guiding light that promises us a path to modern world. Enculturation may not always be bad because it helps both societies economically but it doesn’t mean that it’s always good. it replaces our solid grounds with new ideology and not to mention alien values that we openly welcome, ideologies that sometimes deviate our norms. We may be a culture of multiple roots and races but that does not mean we can’t be who we are, a nation of Filipinos, by the Filipinos and for the Filipinos. We are Filipinos, we must evolve and adapt to the circumstances around us and at the same time carry a legacy of our culture.

Manyana habbit
We Filipino adapt so much culture. Being dependent  to others in terms of practicing norms, customs and their cultures. We began to forgot our uniqueness, our names, our own practices and beliefs. We have to confront the need and the question about our own image. We set aside our own practices and forgot them all. Our own culture is beginning to fade and becoming blurring in our vision. We adapt the practice of always saying “later or the Manyana Habit”. We always carrying the things weightlessly or not taking it for granted that perceived that the time is waiting for us. But the thing is, when we were confronted by the requirement and there’s an ample time remaining for us to continue our works. Then the anxiety and depression flows in us. The regret will be the head of our emotion, regret. Manyana Habit ruined our schedule because we prefer set aside the things that we should do. What we need is to assign our priorities to prevent the event of regretting  and lessen the practice of Manyana Habit, avoiding this traits to be a part of our Genuine Culture.

Ningas cogon

One of the Filipinos wronged culture, Ningas Cogon. Our attitude whereby enthusiasm for something to be done quickly wanes, most of the time resulting to hap hazard or unfinished work. The eagerness that we show towards a activity that afterwards immediately fades. These negative traits are dominating in our country as well as foreign countries. As we think about this practice we will notice that we can observe this not only within ourselves but within and outside the society.
Concerning about the Filipino citizen practicing this damaged culture, we should try to avoid or lessen the cases of this happenings. The effect of the undone works to us might be difficult or regrettable.
To explain clearly here is some situation that explains the said culture:
Therefore we find this culture affecting our daily routine and our lives.

COLONIAL PERSPECTIVE.

How did our Colonial masters affect our culture, the Philippine Culture?
The impact of the colonization was still in the midst of the Philippine culture and until today, the Filipino people are still having a deep struggle in rediscovering the freedom that has been lost because of the colonizers.
The discovery of the Philippines by Ferdinand Magellan was the bridge towards the transformation of the Philippine culture.  The Philippines is a land of many natural resources and it is the main attraction that leads Spain for invasion.  During that time, the Philippine was a country of paganism and thousands of people were uneducated. The influence of Spaniards was unbreakable and even though not all Filipinos agreed, there is still a huge number of Filipinos that have been converted into Christian. History stated that the Spain uses their religious power to obtain what they really want. The aim for glory and gold was the original mission of the said colonizers.
The effect was extraordinary and we can easily perceive it. We can straightforwardly express that we are free but the truth is we’re not. Filipinos are not free in terms of spiritual realm. Our beliefs was a created by foreign intruders and yet we are still practicing it. Even in the manners and values that we have was early introduced by our colonizers.  The Filipinos are still dependent on other neighborhood country. We still adapt their cultures in order for us to survive. The most living proof was the language that we are using. The real thing is that, our language is only a deprivation of the Spanish language.  Celebrating fiesta is also a form of invaded culture and even the food we eat.  We really don’t know if the effect was a troublesome. We can still manage to define our own culture even if we don’t understand why these things are happening.

PHILIPPINE PSYCHOLOGY
Juan Tamad

Filipino’s are known for their resiliency and hardworking attitude, not to mention our spirits that tend to rise up throughout life’s challenges. But what we do not see in ourselves as a society is quite vulgar to other people such as the foreign people. Even though we have these multi-talented and unique abilities to represent our country, we have also a generation-old flaw, the Juan Tamad behavior. What is Juan Tamad behavior? Who is Juan Tamad? Juan Tamad is a national symbol for the Filipinos, since this idle behavior is for the one who doesn’t give consideration on the things that matters in our society. Juan Tamad is a story of a Filipino typicality. The application of this story in our daily lives is very usable and significant. It provides lessons that will help us in our interaction in the society. But what is the relevance of discussing these traits?
The observance in these traits then compares it to our personality. We will come to the realization that we always have our imperfection. In our daily routine we reject the often time management, for we have our freewill to only do the desired things. Giving some situations; in our house when we’re commanded by our parents we often not to listen and do it later, in our rooms the arrangements of our things will only be done depending on the mood and in school the preparation for the requirements are only done during the day after the submission. Most of us are guilty in these examples. This characteristic provides a clear negative image we Filipino always practice.
Therefore the existence of Juan Tamad in our daily lives are manifested and due o the large number of people practicing this traits it becoming our culture, truly a Filipino culture.
Filippino Time
We are aware of these activities that we always arrive late. From the Juan Tamad behavior that gives less priority in the activities, now the actual time assigned for a certain schedule has been moved by us. That we often do in every interaction with other people. Filipino time is the name given to the practice that the exact time of agreement will be set aside.
Many people practice this late behavior. We Filipinos are one of this people who enjoys it, we forgot the saying “time is gold”. Maybe the time isn’t gold anymore, the precious time is turned into dull concept we people perceived. For us, being late can be sometimes considered a norm in the society. We are used to forgive people knowing that they will do it again, it might be our flaw but still, it’s a part of our nature. A simple definition of our culture.

2. DAMAGED CULTURE

Us Filipinos have the power to change our lives for the betterment of our future. We are the weavers of our faith, the architects of our present and the master of our lives. Time will come where all filipinos will be one, and will upheld the common goal. the rediscovery of our rich past.. We may not be the best today but atleast we are better.
